Vintage Japanese Buddhist Altar Fitting Lacquer Offering Table
This is a vintage Japanese Buddhist altar offering table (uwajoku). It is coated with gold, red, black, and yellow lacquer and made with wood (main body) and resin (legs and gold fringe pieces). The front side is all gold with small chrysanthemums. While it appears that the top panel can be removed (this is usually the case), the previous owner has adhered the pieces together.
In the case of memorial services and decoration, a piece of cloth called uchishiki is inserted here. The feet have felt fabric on them. There are two types of offering tables Maejoku and Uwajoku. Maejoku is placed in front of the Shumidan. It is used for 3 Gusoku (candle stand, flower vase, and incense burner). Uwajoku is placed in front of Amidanyorai. It is used for a flower vase, a rice cup, and a kasha incense burner.
