Japanese Buddhist altar Butsudan
This is a Japanese vintage wooden Buddhist altar cabinet, or butsudan. In Japan, the Buddhist altar is a place to enshrine the principal image that is the center of the user's faith, and is a sacred place to hold memorial services and send prayers for ancestors as a "small temple in the home".
A more compact and more simplistic version of the standard cabinet butsudan, this altar is lacquered black and with simple gold details. It has one drawer and one pull-out shelf for storing and displaying altar fittings and accessories. The back wall consists of a gold-painted panel and the inside ceiling is a lattice. The two doors have gold makie chrysanthemums with butterflies as well as small slices of abalone shell (raden) to decorated them. It comes with two rectangular covers made of resin and felt that protect the bottom step and the pull-out shelf from damage.
