Antique Japanese Ukiyoe Woodblock Print

This is a Japanese woodblock print Ukiyoe by Ikuhide Kobayashi.  The title of the kanji characters say Kana Dehon Chushingura(仮名手本忠臣蔵).  "Kana Dehon Chushingura" is one of the traditional Japanese performing arts, known as Bunraku (puppet theater) and Kabuki (traditional Japanese theater). This work is based on the story of the Ako Incident (also known as the Forty-Seven Ronin Incident), with the narrative adapted to the background of the Muromachi period (the era of the Northern and Southern Courts).  Ukiyoe is a genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties, kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers, scenes from history and folk tales, travel scenes and landscapes, flora and fauna, and erotica.
