Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features a landscape with mountains in the background. There is some building in the middle, as well as a plum tree in blossom with a deer under it. A rising sun and flying cranes can be seen in the sky. It is a classic sansui landscape painting with a lot of symbolic features. This piece is signed and has a red seal.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
