Vtg Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, Dorei or Tsuchi-Suzu. It is in the shape of a Bugaku dancer, and the costume is for a dance called Seigaiha. It is painted, a green garment, Ho; a purple sleeveless garment, Hanpi; and a white garment, Shitagasane. There is a Hanabishi family crest at the bottom. A white braided cord is attached at the top, and a clay ball is inside.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
