Antique Japanese Buddhist Altar Butsudan Drawer
This item comes from an antique Japanese wooden Buddhist altar cabinet. This drawer is mostly coated in brown lacquer; the sides are matte, but the wooden grain can be seen through, and the front is glossy, though it is worn. The square front has a black frame with a drawer pull on the inside of the frame top. The black frame has gold embellishment and metal parts on the corners.
In Japan, the Buddhist altar is a place to enshrine the principal image that is the center of faith, and is a sacred place to hold memorial services for ancestors as a "small temple in the home".
Acquired at the famous Osu Antique Market in Nagoya, Japan.
