Vintage Japanese Wooden Storage Box for Hanging Scroll

Handcrafted in a light brown color, this sturdy, slender box is designed to store a hanging scroll, or kakejiku. The lid fits flush on the top. It has two wooden brackets inside the box to secure the scroll. This specific box has inscriptions on the top and inside the lid. There is a red seal inside the lid.

Typically displayed in Japanese tokonoma alcoves in homes and other traditional establishments such as ryokan, traditional Japanese inns, hanging scrolls feature various themes, from seasonal/holiday images to poems to Buddhist texts and imagery. For additional decorative detail, it's popular to add scroll weights, or fuchin, which are tassels with heavy polished stones that hang from the bottom end caps.
