Japanese Wooden Fan
This is a Japanese wooden fan or Uchiwa. Uchiwa is a traditional fan tool typically made of wood or bamboo and paper in a flat paddle-like shape. This particular fan is made of paper-thin slices of cedar wood collected from Koya, a place in western Wakayama Prefecture famous for the Buddhist temples on the mountain. This fan is a souvenir from the Koyasan Reihoukan Art Museum, a place that specializes in Heian and Kamakura period works of writing, art, etc. This kanji character on the front is an exerpt from the famous Roukoshiiki, a Buddhist text written by one of the most prominent figures in Buddhism, Kobo Daishi (also known as Kukai).
