Japanese Ukiyoe Woodblock Print Art Reproduction

This Japanese art print is a reproduction of a ukiyo-e woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaru. It is a portrait of a woman, likely a geisha, adjusting hairpins. According to the inscriptions, the woman is a courtesan called Shinohara working at the house Tsuruya in a location designed as Seiro Nana Komachi. This type of ukiyoe is called bijinga, beautiful ladies. 

Ukiyoe is a genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties, kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers, scenes from history and folk tales, travel scenes and landscapes, flora and fauna, and erotica.
