Japanese Ukiyoe Woodblock Print Art

This Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print is an artwork by Kamei Tobei titled 'Watching the Daimonji Fire from Sanjo Bridge', a famous summer scenery in Kyoto. It features men and women in yukata packed on the bridge, watching a lit-up fire shaped as the character 大 (big) on the mountain. The people dressed in yukata are printed with joyful and summer-like colors such as blue, green, purple, white, and yellow. In contrast, the mountain at night is black, with the fire in red. The print is signed with a stamp. It is placed under a thick paper frame with a paper cover. There is a sticker with information in English on the back. It comes with a matching paper envelope.

Ukiyoe is a genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties, kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers, scenes from history and folk tales, travel scenes and landscapes, flora and fauna, and erotica.
