Vintage Japanese Shikishi Art Board Painting

This is a vintage Japanese hand-painted shikishi art board. A painting and a poem, or a haiku, are painted on silk and mounted on this paper art board. It depicts a man in a blue kimono, lying on the floor and reading a book, with burning incense and a thin trail of smoke rising into the air. It is signed with a red seal.

There are three basic types of shikishi paper—calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In the current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.

• Good condition considering age. Brown stains and discoloration. Corners are worn. Some wrinkles. Slight tears in the silk. Wear and tear due to age. Please see the photos.
