Vintage Iron Sweets Mold for Monaka
This is a vintage cast iron baking mold for making monaka shells. Monaka are a traditional Japanese sweets that consists of two thin wafer-like shells that are assembled together with red bean paste, cream, fruit, or other fillings. Today, these delicate confections are crafted by using electric presses. This piece is meant to be placed over fire or coals. It has four bean-shaped (mame) impressions of maple leaves and chidori birds, and has an iron loop at the end to secure the mold shut during baking.
