Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features a portrait of a man dancing. The man is wearing a green kimono top with black bottoms. In one hand, he is holding a branch of a tree with pink blossoms, likely ume plum blossoms. Three young children are also painted. A red sun or moon is also painted. This piece is titled and has a red seal.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
