Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku W/ Wooden Box

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features calligraphy of one character painted in light blue on a red fan shape. The kanji is kotobuki, meaning congratulations. The box has characters on the inside and the outside of the lid.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. It was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan and has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room, and Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
