Vintage Japanese Wooden Storage Box for Hanging Scroll
Hand-crafted and in a brown color, this sturdy, slender box is made to store a hanging scroll, or kakejiku. The lid sits on the top. It has two wooden brackets inside the box to secure the scroll. This specific box has no inscriptions but there is a label on one side.
Typically on display in Japanese tokonoma alcoves in homes and other traditional establishments such as ryokan, traditional Japanese inns, hanging scrolls have various themes, from seasonal/holiday images to poems to Buddhist text and imagery. For additional decorative detail, it's popular to add scroll weights, or fuchin, which are tassels with heavy polished stones that hang from the bottom end caps.
