Vintage Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, or dorei. Representing the animals of the zodiac, this bell is shaped like a horse. It is red, white, and gold with accents of blue. On the side is the kanji for fortune/wealth. It has a braided red and white silk cord tied at the top and a small white clay ball inside.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
