Vtg Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, Dorei or Tsuchi-Suzu. This dorei is in the shape of a grinning black whale (kujira). It has resin eyes. There is a black clay ball inside as well as a bright red string tied at the top. This is a souvenir item from Nanki Shirahama, an area in western Wakayama.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
