Vtg Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, Dorei or Tsuchi-Suzu, in the shape the head of a karasu tengu, a character out of yokai folklore. It has a painted face and a yellow colored string tied to the top via a loop. Often confused with red tengu, yokai with red faces, wings, and a prominent long nose, karasu tengu are depicted as servants or minions to red tengu.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
