Vintage Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, or dorei. Representing the animals of the zodiac, this bell is in the shape of a cow (ushi). It is mostly black with a green saddle, a small red sticker, and a gold ribbon tied at the back through the side holes. The inside of the slit is colored red. It has a small clay ball inside and has a paper tag attached to the top.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
