Vintage Japanese Chiyogami Paper Tansu Chest

This is a vintage Japanese compact tansu chest of drawers. Using thick chiyogami washi papers, this piece is decorated with a traditional kikkou hanabishi (kikkoumon) pattern in red, green, black, and beige. This type of pattern mimics the look of a turtle shell symbolizing longevity. At the center of each is a chestnut flower. This piece also uses simple metal hardware. It has five drawers. This beautiful tansu chest can be used for storing sewing supplies, jewelry, or other trinkets.

Strong, durable, and with gorgeous designs mirroring styles found on kimono fabric, chiyogami paper is commonly found in textile art such as paper dolls and for decorating tins and boxes. As it became more widespread and popular, it is also used for origami, accessories, book covers, and more.
