Vintage Japanese Chiyogami Paper Sewing Chest

This is a Japanese sewing box, also called Haribako. Using thick chiyogami washi papers, this piece is decorated with an elaborate display of plants and flowers in red, black, and gold. It has four drawers, two of which are hidden behind two sliding panels. This beautiful tansu chest can be used for storing sewing supplies, jewelry, or other trinkets.

Strong, durable, and with gorgeous designs mirroring styles found on kimono fabric, chiyogami paper is commonly found in textile art such as paper dolls and for decorating tins and boxes. As it became more widespread and popular, it is also used for origami, accessories, book covers, and more.
