Vtg Japanese Ceramic Sake Bottle Kayoi-Tokkuri
This is a Japanese vintage sake bottle. This bottle is in grayish white color and has blue Japanese characters on the front. The kanji characters are: Egawa street 江川通り, Mikasaya 三笠屋. They indicate the location and name of a sake shop. This particular sake bottle has an attached string to facilitate transport and a cork plug to preserve the liquid.
Also called a Kayoi-Tokkuri, this type of bottle is used to pour sake. The commuting sake bottle became popular as a rental container for liquor stores in the Edo period when sake began to be consumed on a daily basis.
