Vintage Japanese Nanbu Tekki Cast Iron Kettle
This is a vintage Japanese small Nambu Tekki cast iron kettle, or Tetsubin. It has a chrysanthemum (kiku) pattern throughout with bamboo leaf and plum blossom accents. The handle is simple and movable and there is a removable aluminum strainer insert for tea leaves. The inside of the pot is coated to prevent rust. There is a raised marking on the side that states this piece as nanbu (南部).
Tetsubin began to be used in tea ceremonies in the late Edo period. Efficacy: Boiling water in an iron kettle makes the water milder and tastier, as well as providing iron to nourish the body.
