Japanese Uchishiki Buddhist Altar Kyozukue Tablecloth
This is a vintage Japanese Buddhist altar tablecloth or uchishiki. Made of silk, the back is plain green while the front side is a stunning royal purple color with a large gold floral mon crest, paulownia, plum blossom, and other flowers. This tablecloth is rectangular and is made to sit on top of the kyozukue surface.
Uchishiki is mainly used by followers of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism on the upper table (Maejyoku) and the front table (Uwajyoku) in the Buddhist altar during events such as New Year's Day, the equinoctial week, Obon, and memorial services.
