Japanese Uchishiki Embroidered Buddhist Altar Tablecloth
This is a vintage Japanese Buddhist altar tablecloth, or uchishiki. Made of silk, the top band and backside have a white floral design. The main part has rich red background with striking gold embroidered chrysanthemums (kiku). The chrysanthemum is one of many important symbols in Japanese culture.
Uchishiki is mainly used by followers of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism as the upper table (Maejyoku) and the front table (Uwajyoku) in the Buddhist altar during events such as New Year's Day, the equinoctial week, Obon, and memorial services.
