Vintage Japanese Buddhist Altar Fitting Lacquer Offering Table
This is a large-size vintage Japanese Buddhist altar offering table (Maejoku). It is coated with mostly shiny black lacquer with gold accents. It has brass metal decorative plates on the edges as well as a carved natural wood piece front and center with birds. It contains a matching, removable top panel.
In the case of memorial services, a piece of cloth called Uchishiki is inserted between the base and top piece. There are two types of offering tables Maejoku and Uwajoku. Maejoku is placed in front of the Shumidan. It is used for 3 Gusoku (candle stand, flower vase, and incense burner). Uwajoku is placed in front of Amidanyorai. It is used for a flower vase, a rice cup, and a kasha incense burner.
