Vintage Japanese Buddhist Altar Butsudan Base Piece
This item comes from a Japanese vintage wooden Buddhist altar cabinet. This is the base piece that the main altar stands on and is mainly used for storage. It is made of wood and lacquered mostly black with gold accents and brown metal border plates for decoration. The top side is bare wood, but flat.
The front is separated into three sections, each with their own door that lifts up like a flap and then slides back into the cabinet. The leftmost section houses two small drawers decorated with makie gold bamboo and momiji maple leaf designs. The center and rightmost sections have a pull-out tray with a secret compartment on the back end. One has a gorgeous makie image of flying cranes while the other has two mon symbols with bamboo and peonies.
In Japan, the Buddhist altar is a place to enshrine the principal image that is the center of faith, and is a sacred place to hold memorial services for ancestors as a "small temple in the home".
