Vtg Japanese Buddhist Altar Butsudan
This item is a vintage Japanese Buddhist altar, called butsudan. This altar has a dark reddish brown color, two paneled doors, a retractable shelf, and two small drawers on the bottom. The inside of the altar has two smaller shelves to display religious items (butsugu) and is richly decorated. Three religious images are displayed at the back.
In Japan, the Buddhist altar is a place to enshrine religious icons that are the center of faith, and is a sacred place to hold memorial services for ancestors as a "small temple in the home".
