Japanese Uchishiki Embroidered Buddhist Altar Tablecloth
This is a vintage Japanese Buddhist altar tablecloth, or uchishiki. Made of silk and other woven fabric, the backside is white with a floral pattern while the front is also white with an embroidered tree with purple flowers.
Uchishiki is mainly used by followers of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism on the upper table (Maejyoku) and the front table (Uwajyoku) in the Buddhist altar during events such as New Year's Day, the equinoctial week, Obon, and memorial services.
