Japanese Shikishi Art Board Painting
This Japanese shikishi art board represents a traditional Japanese house seen from the side. The house is in the mountain, surrounded by trees. The house is in the background of the composition. In the foreground, there is a pond with a stone lantern and a beautiful pine tree. The scenery is painted in black and has a lot of details. This handpainted shikishi art board is signed on the bottom right.
There are three basic types of shikishi paper—calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In the current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.
