Antique Japanese Chochin Lantern
This is an antique Japanese paper lantern called chochin. It is made with thin, brown washi paper with a thin bamboo frame. The lantern compresses flat for easy access to the candle. It is decorated with a floral pattern on the front, possibly a kamon family crest, and a name in black kanji on the back that say "Tonogaito". The unique feature of this piece is that it's meant to be handheld. It is attached to a black bamboo frame that is slightly taller than the opened lantern. The stand features a handle so the lantern can be easily carried around.
