Antique Japanese Ukiyoe Woodblock Print
This is a Japanese woodblock print Ukiyoe by Ikuhide Kobayashi. The kanji inscription says "The Chronicles of the Suppression of Rebels in Kagoshima"(鹿児島暴徒追討記). This scene depicts a battle between government forces and rebels during the Meiji period. Ukiyoe is a genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties, kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers, scenes from history and folk tales, travel scenes and landscapes, flora and fauna, and erotica.
