Japanese Buddhist Costume Sash

This Japanese Buddhist costume surplice (wagesa or hangesa) is worn around the neck. It is purple with a gold geometric pattern. There is a white floral kamon (crest) on each side as well as behind the neck, and a red seal, likely from a temple, on the inside of the fold. The string is orange and gold. This type of sash is called kataginu and can be worn when appearing in front of the Buddha, and during services and ceremonies. According to the wooden box, this particular kataginu is a Monto-shikisho. It is used by the monks of the Jodo Shinshu Honganji-ha Buddhist sect.
