Vtg Japanese Buddhist Altar Butsudan Doors
This is a 2-piece set of outer doors coming from a Japanese antique wooden Buddhist altar cabinet. The two doors, a total of four tall panels, showcase black lacquer on the front with brushed lacquer centers and metal border decorations and front latch, while the back side is black lacquer with gilt gold leaf decorating the centers of each panel. The front latch piece has a peony and chrysanthemum design. The hinges on the outside edges are plain metal.
In Japan, the Buddhist altar is a place to enshrine the principal image that is the center of faith, and is a sacred place to hold memorial services for ancestors as a "small temple in the home".
