Vintage Japanese Wooden Shrine Plaque, Ema
This vintage Japanese ema plaque features an illustration of a white rabbit jumping above a blue and gold wave with a red sun in the background. This plaque is from a shrine called Dewasanzan. It has some red inscriptions on the right as well as a red seal with the name of the shrine. It has a red braided cord and two attached bells.
Ema is a small wooden plaque used at Shinto shrines, and sometimes Buddhist temples, that worshipers can write their wishes, hopes, and dreams on. Once written, it is hung on a special wooden stand or tree where the kami (spirits or gods) are thought to receive them.
