Vintage Japanese Wooden Storage Box for Hanging Scroll
Hand-crafted and in a brown wood color, this sturdy, slender box is made to store a hanging scroll, or kakejiku. The lid fits flush on the top. The lid brackets are missing. This specific box has a torn label on one side, and holes at the bottom to attach a cord or a ribbon to secure the lid.
Typically on display in Japanese tokonoma alcoves in homes and other traditional establishments such as ryokan, traditional Japanese inns, hanging scrolls have various themes, from seasonal/holiday images to poems to Buddhist text and imagery. For additional decorative detail, it's popular to add scroll weights, or fuchin, which are tassels with heavy polished stones that hang from the bottom end caps.
