Vintage Japanese Silk Fabric-Covered Storage Box for Hanging Scroll
Crafted from heavy paper and an iridescent floral red silk fabric, this Japanese scroll box (kakejiku hako) is made to store a hanging scroll. The lid is comprised of folding pieces of the box and is secured via two plastic toggles on the side. There are two carved wooden brackets inside to hold a scroll in place.
Typically on display in Japanese tokonoma alcoves in homes and other traditional establishments such as ryokan, traditional Japanese inns, hanging scrolls have various themes, from seasonal/holiday images to poems to Buddhist text and imagery. For additional decorative detail, it's popular to add scroll weights, or fuchin, which are tassels with heavy polished stones that hang from the bottom end caps.
