Japanese Porcelain Yunomi Teacup
This vintage Japanese teacup is made of porcelain and shaped and painted with the likeness of a popular Noh character called Otafuku/Okame. Also known as "the smiling woman", this female character has a round face, a low and round nose, drooping hair, and round and protruding cheeks (high cheeks). She is said to bring happiness and good fortune to any man she marries.
This cup is called yunomi or a smaller, sometimes more cylindrical cup made for serving and drinking sencha (standard looseleaf tea). These cups are typically brought to guest in one's home, a business, or a restaurant on a lacquered obon tray.
