Vintage Japanese Daruma Figurine
This is a vintage Japanese daruma made of papier-mâché (hariko). It is a traditional Japanese lucky charm and toy that imitates the figure of Daruma Daishi sitting in meditation. Daruma dolls are initially sold without eyes. The belief is to fill in one eye with a wish one wants granted, then fill in the other eye when the wish comes true. Overall it is a visual representation of perseverance, hard work, and luck.
This daruma has not been used. It is white which is used for luck in love and harmony. It also has a slot on the top to insert coins like a piggy bank, however there is no means of opening this figure without damaging it.
