Vintage Japanese Chiyogami Paper Sewing Chest
This is a Japanese sewing box, also called Haribako. Using thick chiyogami washi papers over wood, this piece is decorated with a beautiful display of folding fans and flowers in red, black, green, and gold. It has three drawers with simple plastic hardware. This beautiful tansu chest can also be used for storing sewing supplies, jewelry, or other trinkets.
Strong, durable, and with gorgeous designs mirroring styles found on kimono fabric, chiyogami paper is commonly found in textile art such as paper dolls and for decorating tins and boxes. As it became more widespread and popular, it is also used for origami, accessories, book covers, and more.
