Vtg Japanese Paper Fan Decoration
This is a Japanese vintage paper fan or Uchiwa. Uchiwa is a tool that creates wind by fanning it with your hand. This miniature replica fan is a postcard that could be sent by mail. The back of the fan has space to paste a postal stamp, and write the recipient's address and a few words. The front of the fan is decorated with an ukiyoe-like picture representing boats on the sea close to a harbor or other inhabited buildings. This picture is a reproduction of a Japanese woodblock painting by Utagawa Hiroshige: Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido: Kuwana.
