Japanese Brushed Lacquer Lidded Fumibako Box
This is a Japanese lacquered wooden letter box (fumibako). It is traditionally used to store letters, small books, important documents, paper, and other stationary items.
It is also often used for Buddhist items, such as altar prayer books, prayer beads, charms, and for incense storage.
This beautiful medium brown brushed lacquer box has campanula bell flowers (kikyo) in the lid. Each flower is made of thin, individually cut pieces of wood adhered to the lid and lacquered over. Raden, or thin slices of abalone shell add extra elegant detail.
