Vintage Japanese Lacquered Bamboo Bento Box
This is a Japanese vintage lacquered woven bamboo bento box, also called jubako. Coated with gorgeous medium brown lacquer, each individual oval-shaped tier has its own unique type of basket weave on display (some with open weave and some more tightly woven) and a thin wooden base for a bottom piece. At the top is a fitted lid wth a black lacquered surface that has a landscape scenery hand-painted in gold (makie). The top three tiers including the lid can be removed from the stack while the bottom tier is fixed to the carrier. The carrier has a tall looping handle with carved floral designs on the sides.
This was purchased at the famous Osu Antique Market in Nagoya
