This is a vintage Japanese ceramic green tea bowl, Matcha Chawan. It has a light gray crackle. On top of the glaze, several Japanese characters are painted in blue. This bowl is likely a bowl used as an offering to support a temple or a sanctuary. This type of bowls is traditionally used for preparing and drinking green tea during tea ceremonies.We got this item at an antique auction in Tajimi in Gifu, Japan
