Vintage Japanese Buddhist Altar Fitting Lacquer Offering Table

This is a large vintage Japanese Buddhist altar offering table (Maejoku). It is coated in a glossy black  and red lacquer with gold-painted accents. On the front side has carved chrysanthemums painted gold. It contains a removable, winged top panel with gold on the front edge with red on the top.

In the case of memorial services, a piece of cloth called Uchishiki is inserted between the base and top piece. There are two types of offering tables Maejoku and Uwajoku. Maejoku is placed in front of the Shumidan. It is used for 3 Gusoku (candle stand, flower vase, and incense burner). Uwajoku is placed in front of Amidanyorai. It is used for a flower vase, a rice cup, and a kasha incense burner.
