Vintage Japanese Buddhist Altar Butsudan Drawer
This item comes from a Japanese vintage wooden Buddhist altar cabinet. This small, shallow drawer is mostly coated in glossy classic black lacquer. The front contains a gold-painted border along with an exquisite gold makie lotus pond design. It also has slices of raden (abalone shell) included in the design for extra shimmer and detail.
In Japan, the Buddhist altar is a place to enshrine the principal image that is the center of faith, and is a sacred place to hold memorial services for ancestors as a "small temple in the home".
