Japanese Buddhist Altar Fitting Flower Vase
This is a pair of vintage Japanese bronze metal flower vases, or hanatate, for Buddhist altars. This particular pair is heavy for stability. They have a traditional shape with added floral detail on the bottom.
It is common to offer a range of seasonal and symbolic flowers in front of a Buddhist altar. It is also a vessel for Sakaki leaves or Shashagi leaves in Shinto. The offering of Sakaki tree leaves signifies that the gods living in the sakaki tree will protect the grave and the soul.
