Antique Japanese Wood Lacquered Base Neck Pillow
This is an antique Japanese neck rest or pillow called takamakura. This neck rest consists of a very simple black lacquered base with beautiful gold and silver makie designs of folding fans with chrysanthemums. There are two holes on the top with metal decoration used for inserting a string to hold a fabric pillow on top.
A neck rest, or Takamakura, is a support stand for the neck designed to keep hair intact while sleeping or resting and was used by the Japanese traditional female entertainers, the Geisha, to preserve their outstanding hair.
