This is an antique lid of a bento box intended to be used as home decoration. It is made of wood lacquered black on the front side and red on the back. It features a collection of popular floral and plant mon crest symbols (Momiji leaves, peony, chrysanthemum, wisteria, etc).
Maki-e is a decorative painting technique done by sprinkling gold powder onto wet lacquer before it hardens.
