This is a vintage Japanese resin letter box (fumibako). It is made of resin and created to mimic a wooden lacquered box. It is glossy black and has a Makie of gold and red bamboo on the lid. There is a signature next to the bamboo design. It comes with an original cardboard box.
Fumibako are traditionally used to store letters, small books, important documents, paper, and other stationery items. It is also often used for Buddhist items, such as altar prayer books, prayer beads, charms, and for incense storage. This type is called gobunshobako.
